What to Consider When Shopping for New Frames

February 17, 2022

The way you frame your face shows everyone who you are, and a slight changeup can shake up your worldview. A new look to go with a new season, or a new stage in your life can be just the thing you need to reinvent your personal style.

As it can sometimes be difficult to make a decision on a new pair of frames, here are some tips on what to keep in mind when you speak with an optician:

The pieces of every frame to consider

Shape

The common frame shapes to consider are: round, square or oval. Each of these makes a different impact, in combination with the size of the frame. Large square frames have a distinct look, and so do small circular or oval frames. Figuring out what frame shape speaks to you and what makes you feel comfortable is the most important, so don’t be afraid to try out different frame shapes.

Size

As a general rule of thumb, your frames should be as wide as your face. The top of the frames should stay below the line of your eyebrows while the lower edge shouldn’t sit on your cheeks, otherwise it may rub against your skin.

Depending on the type of lenses you need, your optician may have recommendations on the best size for your glasses.

Color

The frame color will play off of your natural skin tone. While there are no hard-and-fast rules, people like to group warm colors together (peach, sienna, burgundy, copper, gold) which compliment warm complexions, and cool colors together (silver, black, gray, blue) which compliment cool complexions. However, people sometimes intentionally break these “rules” because juxtaposition pops and can make a statement. Sometimes the two things you thought would never work together look better than you think.

Lenses

The most important part of any eyeglasses is definitely the lenses. Lenses are customized to your prescription and can include a number of coatings like UV protection and anti-glare. Before purchasing your new pair of glasses, you will want to make sure that your lenses will be made using high quality and technology.

Aside from all the style options, you have to make sure you have an accurate prescription. At Custom Eyes, you can get a comprehensive eye exam in person, and we have a warm and knowledgeable staff to help you navigate insurance benefits and frame allowance.

A comprehensive eye exam will include a complete review of your ocular health, as well as an up-to-date assessment of your visual acuity and prescription. Once you know what you need, we can help you figure out the rest. Book your appointment today or schedule a free frame styling with one of our optometrists!
