What is LASIK?
LASIK is short for Laser-Assisted in situ keratomileusis, and is a procedure for vision correction that uses lasers. LASIK has a 99% success rate for correcting vision. However, as the procedure involves a laser making micro incisions in your eye, you will want to take care of yourself and take it easy after the surgery.

Important Tips for post-LASIK recovery
1.Plan a ride home. You can call family, friends, lyft, or Uber–but you will not be able to drive yourself. Plan for this, and plan to take at least 48 hours to yourself to rest.
2. Make accommodations. Make sure everyone knows you will be out of office and offline. This is your recovery time. You don’t want to be very active while you recover. Rest and relaxation is the name of the game.
3. Stay hydrated. Your eyes are always moist, but after a procedure like this, they may dry out. You will want to hydrate often, taking small sips frequently over time. This will help nourish your body and keep your eyes well hydrated.
4. Use eye drops. Dry eyes are uncomfortable. Even if you drink enough water, your eyes will have dryness symptoms for about a week after surgery. Ask your doctor for a reasonable supply of eye drops and when the best time to use them is. They will probably recommend that you use them whenever needed.
5. Do not strain your eyes. Accept the adjustment. Use polarized sunglasses or light reducing wear given by your doctor. Keep your shades drawn and listen to some informative podcasts.

6. Rest. Do not stay up all night watching Netflix. Get plenty of rest and catch up on some much needed sleep. Sleep is vital for your eye health, and this will give your eyes time to heal and adjust to what they have just experienced.
7. Use compresses. If there is swelling or pain, it is okay to use a mildly cool compress on the area. Do not use a solid ice pack though, you do not want anything too cold directly on your skin or near your sore eyes.
8. Reach out to your doctor and attend follow up appointments. Talk to your doctor about what signs to look for. If you experience pain, swelling, a fever, or eye dryness that does not go away, do not hesitate to call for advice. LASIK is common and very successful, but anything can happen. Make sure you cover all your bases and ask questions so you can relax later. Follow up appointments are crucial to gauge your recovery and eye health, so try your best to make them.
