FAQ

When should my child have his first eye exam?

Currently the state of Illinois requires an eye exam for all school age children beginning in kindergarten. Some preschool programs also require exams. If you’re concerned that your child is having vision issues earlier, Dr. Shoudis sees children over the age of three at the Roscoe location.

How often do I need an eye exam?

Individuals who wear contacts need to come in every year for an exam. Adults who wear glasses can come every two years, while children wearing glasses should come yearly.

My prescription hasn’t changed in years, why do I have to have a new exam for contacts every year?

Because contacts sit directly on your eye, they can impact your ocular health severely if not properly monitored and cared for. The state of Illinois requires a contact lens exam every year to prevent consumers from accidentally harming their only set of eyes.

What insurance do you take?

We take VSP, EyeMed, Aetna, Davis Vision, Humana Vision and NVA. Additionally, we also take PPO plans offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna and Cigna.

What’s the difference between medical insurance and vision insurance when we’re talking about vision coverage?

Sometimes your major medical will cover comprehensive eye exams. Typically your medical insurance will contract out to another company, similar to dental insurance. For example, your insurance may be primarily through BCBS, but BCBS can contract out through a large number of other companies for the vision coverage, and it varies from plan to plan. Some medical insurance companies do not have vision coverage, but have a discount plan associated with them. If you are unsure of your vision benefits and who your vision coverage is through, your Human Resources department should be able to tell you exactly who the vision portion is billed to.

Do you carry frames for children?

We have kids frames at both stores, with a broader selection at the Roscoe location.

Can I put my prescription in any of your sunglasses?

Many of our sunglasses can accommodate prescriptions. If you are looking for prescription sunglasses our staff is happy to guide you in selecting a pair.

I have a high prescription, can you give me the thinnest lenses?

We can absolutely discuss the best options for your prescription – we never want you to walk out with “coke- bottle” glasses!

Why do you like anti-reflective treatments so much?

Because they are the best. In a few words, it helps you see better. To get specific about it, the anti-reflective treatments transmit more light and thus reduce your eye strain. It is especially helpful with night driving and using the computer. There are several different options available today, so if you had it in the past and it was difficult to clean or scratched off, please tell us so that we can get you a product that will never do those things.

Do you treat eye emergencies?

Yes. Please call ahead, and if we cannot accommodate you in an immediate fashion we can help you find another doctor who will.

What kinds of contact lenses can you fit?

As premier eye care provider with Acuvue, Ciba, Bausch & Lomb and CooperVision, Custom Eyes has access to the newest contact lenses on the market. All of our doctors have experience fitting contacts for astigmatism, multi-focal and mono-vision, as well as rigid gas permeable lenses.

What’s the difference between an optometrist and ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes diseases of the eye. An optometrist focuses on vision correction with glasses and contact lenses.

What’s so special about your frames?

Many of our frames are hand crafted on a small scale, giving them attention to detail that is not possible with mass manufactured frames. For more information on our frames, visit our “products” page where you can find links to the products’ primary websites.

Do you offer warranties on the frame and lenses?

Most frames and lenses come with a one year warranty. The frames typically are warranted against manufacturer’s defect; most lenses carry a one time warranty against scratches. For example, if you run over your glasses with your car, the frame is not warranted, but intact lenses might be. Every situation is different. If something breaks on your glasses, please bring them in so we can help you find the best solution.

Can I bring in my own prescription?

Yes, absolutely. However, if there is any kind of error with the prescription, the prescribing doctor is responsible.

Can I buy the frame only?

Yes, absolutely.

Can I bring in my own frame to have new lenses in them?

Yes, absolutely. However in the rare instance that damage occurs while the frame is in our possession, we cannot be held responsible.

What are the benefits of the new progressive lenses?

We like to use the newest progressive lenses because they are easier for many patients to adapt to and provide better vision than older designs.

How should I take care of my lenses?

With a cleaning cloth of course! If you need one, please stop by and we will be happy to give you one. In the case of a particularly dirty pair of glasses, infrequent washing with mild soap and warm water works well. Be sure your soap has absolutely no additives like softeners or drying agents, as those things are not good for your lenses or frame!

How long does it take to get lenses made?

That depends on exactly what options you choose and your insurance coverage. The long end is 7-10 business days. But if you need new glasses asap let us know and we can discuss options that could have your glasses arrive more quickly, sometimes as soon as next business day.

Where is your dog?

Dr. Sculley’s dog Rico (the bulldog) is around from time to time. After the puppy Tank passed away, Rico got a new brother, Winston. Winston’s favorite game at Custom Eyes is trying to go out the front door, so now the dogs frequently play at doggy daycare and then rest at home. Dr. Crumbliss’s dog, Tucker, is usually napping under a chair in the exam room when he’s not out on the sales floor.

Do you match online prices?

We do set our contact lens prices in line with a particular online competitor, but we cannot price match.
